New Tutor Scam Featuring Crowell Edmond

There is a new tutor scam circulating on CL these days. One of the key scam artists is Crowell Edmonds who desperately needs a tutor for his child (James or insert any name). Mr. Edmonds claims to live in Denmark but is planning to move to the USA due to a job promotion ( or any other factitious scenario).

The scam works by first soliciting unsuspecting women with the prospect of a job. Next a fake check is mailed with the instructions to deposit it ASAP. The would be tutor is then instructed to purchase video games or other electronic devices for the child, and mail them to Denmark, USA, or where ever. After a couple of weeks the tutors banking institution will inform them about the bogus check and now they will be on the hook for the amount used from the fake check.

This scam can be avoided by always dealing locally and never from anyone claiming to live in a foreign country.

Hello,

Just wanted to add another name to the tutoring scam list. This person posted in the Louisville, KY section of cl: Reben Allen claims to offer $50 an hour for a math/science tutor for his son, "James." Reben says he is from Illinois originally (his email response is still full of bad grammar and mistakes though) but is currently working in China. His story is the same as the other scammers: his child will need a tutor while he's in the U.S., and he will send you a check for a large amount from which you are to deduct your payment and wire the rest to a "nanny."

Similar scenario. This was a post in Seattle, WA. A person claiming to live in Denmark posted an ad for a tutor for their son. They are offering to pay 49$. The son's name is "Mike". This person also said they would mail a check asap and then you are to deduct your payment and send the rest to the nanny. Be careful! Don't respond to this person.

Hello,

I wanted to add another scam artist, this time from San Diego, CA.

Hello,
Thanks for replying back to my online job posting, requiring your tutorial service for my Daughter, I would like to make a tutoring arrangement between you and my Daughter for the month of August 2009, I would like you to tutor her within a period of 1 month, on a schedule basis of 1 hr Daily, 3 times weekly, totaling 12 times in a month. I am willing to pay $40/hr. I would like to use these medium to inform you that my Daughter don't live in the US, she would be flying from the Philippine to the US, I want you to teach her during her 8 month stay in the US, if there is need to extend your services, an amendment would be made to your salary. she would be dropped off/picked up by her nanny during the hours of teaching at any location you want the Tutoring to take place in your area.

You would be receiving a check drawn from a Bank in the US, from my business associates in the US, since i am from Philippine and right now am in Cuba for a business trip the payments wont be honored in any bank there in Philippine or here in Cuba , These check would be made out for the cost of the tutorial services you are rendering, and also for the living expense, nanny fees of my Daughter .

Regarding this- I hope i can trust you with these payments, as the payment would be made out in excess, so all you have to do is Deposit and cash the payment at your bank, deduct your tutorial service fee, which should be $40 per hour X 12 Times a Month = $480 i would include an additional $100 for run around fee and any additional text book you might be needing- so $580 is what you deduct from the check you receive , whatever the remaining balance is after deduction of the $580 go ahead and deduct Money Gram or Western union transfer sending charges for sending out the remainder to the Nanny who would be contacting you with further arrangements and instructions regarding pickup/drop off of my Daughter to the library where you would always teach her. So i hope i can trust

you that you will teach my Daughter good academics and some moral respects so that they can be good to their self in the future, i hope i can count on you for the tutorial and the money to be sent to the Nanny. I look forward to read a detailed message from you containing the following information, if you are OK with my arrangements.

New One for Palo Alto:

Hello,

Thank you for the email. At present, i seek an experienced private tutor for my teenage son in Math, English, Science and reading tutorial. I would be happy to have my son under your tutorship. I have made contacts with my son (boy of 14 yrs) concerning this arrangement of the tutoring and it's pretty cool with him. Please advise on your fees (per hour/per day) depending on how you've rendered your services in the past. I want you to know i'm paying for 1 month ($45.00/hr) is what I have in mind. I hope you understand this as total deposit to BOOK your services ).

Also am planning for you to tutor him 3 times a week, which is 2hr per day, so kindly get back to me with the total fee for the subjects and when you will be available to teach him during the week. Also my son does not resides in the states, he stays here with me in United Kingdom ( England ). So my son will be arriving the states on the 3rd of September 2009 and i want him to study more while there in the states because am planning a relocation for him, I took him with me after I lost his mother some years ago which was the single painful experience in my life time.

You will be receiving the payment inform of money orders/check for the tutorials while i will also pay the Nanny that will look after him during his stay there, so as soon as you get the money orders/check cashed you'll deduct cost of tutoring for a month and send balance to my nanny that will be communicated to you later on .

If you are ready and willing to accept this offer which is in the best interest of my son and yourself, kindly send your full information to receive the payment so it can be made out on time as he will be arriving soon, also I want you to know he's my only son and I love him more than I love myself, I would have accompany him if not that am in the middle of a big project so I hope i can trust you with my life because he's my life and reason why i work, also i made a promise to his mom to take very good care of him and see that he has a very bright future.

He is aspiring to be an engineer but his mom would have loved to see him in a doctor's suit... I want you to teach him good morals and academic, also I want you to help me make him discover himself and follow the path of what his heart tells him to be, I want the brightest future for him, I truly hope I can trust you with my son and with the nanny's payment although my son is of out most importance.

Thanks for willing to help, I will be waiting for you to e-mail me with the following details so we can make concrete arrangement very soon .

My 16 year old daughter just emailed me this (I put a stop to it immediately). Email quoted here without her name:

what do you think of this? i gave him my credentials on craig's list. what do you think of this?

AHHH $500 a month
in a public place
4 hrs a week

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. The position is still available and thanks for wanting to take my daughter the tutor. Its really amazing and she is very happy.

I have made contacts with my daughter concerning the arrangement of the tutoring which she told me is ok by her and I want you to know that i am going to pay for 1 month, which should be $30/hr,and also am planning that you will be teaching her 2 times a week, for 2hrs per day,so you will be earning a total sum of $500 per month. In order for you to know we are very serious about this we will sending you a upfront payment for the first month via a bank certified check issued by my financier and will be mail to you via UPS next day delivery. I will also like you to know that my daughter is presently with her mother in Australia and she will be coming over to the state in some few weeks time, i will be depending on you about the tutor. She will be arriving the state on 13th of October.

My Daughter's name is Cheryl, she is just 12yrs and very gentle and full of life.. She will be staying with a good and lovely nanny in the state which i will get in a dew time. and she (nanny) will always bring her for the tutor. The nanny will make arrangement about the apartment they will be staying during her stay in the state and i assure you they will be very close to your location so as not to be late for the tutor.

My financier will effect the payment as soon as i give him the instructions to do so. The payment you will be receiving will be for your one month pay in adavnce and the rest will be for the nanny to take care of cheryl. The tutor will be for 3 months before i will probably get her an admission in a good school and i hope you will be able to help me with that too. Also i will like you to know that cheryl will be coming with the necessary books that you will use in tutoring her and i am relying on you to create lesson plans.

Get back to me with the information below if you are truly serious about the job, so that my financier will issue out the payment asap and so to secure you for the service.

I'm in Missouri and have received two emails from two different men, one coming from Spain and the other from the UK. They all use this same formula, so I think a huge variety of names are being used. Be on the lookout for anyone asking for your information, I guess.
