How to Spot a Scam

Nicholas & Andrea Wells (Formerly Rachel & Christopher Clark)

A while ago we featured Rachel and Christopher Clark, fake landlords who claim to own an apartment in New York City. At first their apartment was located in Brooklyn, then it changed to various locations around Manhattan, and eventually to a house in Queens. Now that enough pressure has been turned up, they have opted to change their identities in an attempt to perpetuate their crimes.

As of today their new names are Andrea & Nicholas Wells. These people claim to live in the UK and willing provide UK telephone numbers. The red flag in their operation begins with their alleged rental agent, John Stanford who is injured or ill in Chicago and cannot show the apartment. As such they need the potential renter to wire them $200 via Western Union (a scam artists favorite friend) for a key deposit. By now the potential victim should be asking themselves, what kind of landlord would send a total stranger a key to an apartment while living in another country?

This is a classic rental scam and has appeared more and more on the New York City CL listings. Once the money has been wired, you will never hear from these people again, let alone obtaining a set of keys. Please beware of these scum bags and their true intentions.

Name: Andrea & Nicholas Wells
Accomplice: John Stanford

Hi. I came across these people. It didn't took me long before noticing that it was probably a scam. What proved it to me was actually this blog. I googled under "Andrea Wells". I will just add that the apartment they are trying to "rent" is located at the 675 Sackett St, in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

I am very happy that I searched for their names and found this article. I am unhappy, however, that this isn't a real apartment. Ah well, at least I get to keep my $220 (looks like they upped the amount as well). This time, the "rep" in Chicago's name is Simon Page, but he is still "recovering from an accident and cannot correspond" with potential renters.

This is the end of the last email they sent me:

"Here is my husband's contact details
Mr. Nicholas Wells,
Tel: +44 702 406 2089, +447035962694
Address: 25 Highgate Hill, London, N19 59A, England"

I emailed them for the apartment on 675 Sackett Street, Brooklyn, NY. Their rep's name is now Jason Stern who's injured in Houston. She states that she her husband and children are in England for work. If her family is that large why is her apt in NY a 1 bdrm? Seems really fishy and I'm glad I googled her name.

This is the contact info she provided: My husband's full names are Nichloas Wells, Telephone (+447024062089)011447024062089 or (+447035962694)011447035962694

The rep is sometimes in Chicago and sometimes in Houston. When scamming people, probably best to keep your story straight between emails.

I, too, am very happy to have found this blog, as I'd just received an email from "Andrea" regarding the 675 Sackett St./Park Slope apartment.

Btw, this time around, the rep is "Simon Baker" and he was in an auto accident in Houston. For some reason, I googled "Andrea Wells" and found this blog...THANK YOU!!!

Anonymous said...

OMG !!!! Thank you very much - thank God for google also. and here I am asking myself how in the world I got so lucky and found such a nice place in Brooklyn for such a great price.... They haven't asked for money yet but yes the representative's name is Jason Stern and he is in Houston (injured).

Anonymous said...

Same thing happened to me, luckily I didn't send any money. Thank you everyone for reporting this!!! This is ridiculous and such a waste of time.

Wow, that blows b/c the photos of the apartment she sent are beautiful! These people are so transparent though. The reason I googled her name is b/c in the first email she sent me, her rep was Jason Stern in Chicago, and then in the second he was from Houston. Lovely. Thanks so much for having this blog, you're awesome. I wonder what happens if you actually call the number...

They tried to scam again. Some people never learn. This time its

Mr. Nicholas Wells,
Tel: +44 702 406 2089, +447035962694
Address: 25 Highgate Hill, London, N19 59A, England

Representative is Jason Stern (injured in Houston) but for some reason was recuperating in Chicago. I think they got their stories mixed up.

They will even send NY State DMV Licenses with the names Nicholas and Andrea Wells so as to make it seem legit. It's a scam.

Also beware that they will proceed to state that they are hurt at the accusation of being scammers.

Thank you so much for posting this! Get the word out on Craig's List that these people are scam artists! I consider myself a reasonably intelligent person and I actually thought about sending them that money. This is scary... I guess the old expression is true: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Since we cleared the apartment for renovation last August, we have not been in New York due to business. Myself, my husband and my children have relocated to England, so we will be given out the apartment for a long duration at $800 /month rate (All Utilities included). Our priori

They have changed their names once again: they now call themselves Rita and Lyle Coffman. And those phone numbers are real, because I actually spoke with one of them! Thank god I got suspicious and googled the apartment and found where they got the pictures (from the actual apartment that is for sale, not for rental). I found this blog by googling the address that they gave me for London. Be alert!

It seems they're using the names Rita Coffman and Lyle Coffman now. They requested a $220 check be sent to Richard Plane at 25 Highgate Hill, London, N19 59A, England. I googled the address and found this post. It seemed to good to be true and it was.

Then a follow up:

Then a follow up e-mail:

Thanks for your response. Personally, I have discussed with my husband about your seriousness regarding our apartment. You can try calling him now if possible.

As you know you are not the first person approaching us for the place so I do appreciate a high level of seriousness because our schedule is very tight. We would like to conclude with the leasing process to focus on our regular business activities as soon as possible. It is because of our business we had to relocate to England in the first place.

There maybe a little problem because our representative will be unable to coordinate things with you from Boston due to his health status but I will try to work things out with my husband for us to conclude with you from here. He bought the apartment because he normally does business in New York but we just want to lease it for the period we will be out of the states. This will be at least 5 years or more. My husband was considering selling off the property but changed his mind because we still have other long term plans for the place. We would like to know the exact duration you want to sign up for the apartment. We wish to start leasing starting June/July. I suggest you find time to call to discuss further.

The monthly rental rate is $850 and security deposit is going at same rate. Like I told you before that this is not about the money, which is why our price is very reasonable. The apartment had just been renovated with security access system installed. We just need someone to take good care of the apartment while we are away. I am very concerned about the state of my kitchen and bathroom. Some of the furniture had been moved to the store room under lock and key. This could be placed back if you like but I will also discuss that with my husband. My husband's direct line is (+447024062089) Dial as 011447024062089 or (+447035962694) dial as 011447035962694, feel free to call from 8am to 9pm GMT.

We intend to start collecting the rental fee of your duration after you have seen the place. We would probably use my husband's Chase account in New York to facilitate the transaction. However, there is nobody there that will show you the place unless we make arrangement to send you the keys along with copies of the house documents, security access decoder, tenancy agreement and other lease signing papers.

I will talk to my husband today about sending you the keys and documents but you will need to scan some form of your id or reference before we do that, preferably send us your Work ID, student ID, Driver's License or state's ID to verify your identification. Alternatively, you can scan your letter of employment or admission letter as reference. The insured cost of shipping is also about $220. More so, after viewing the apartment, if you do not like it, you will also be responsible for sending us back our keys and documents.

If you are okay with this arrangement, get back to us with your feedback.

Regards,
Andrea

I just came across this, I wish I had before the scam. Just wanted to let everyone know I let Western Union know and will be filing a report with the police. They went by the alias Rita and Lyle Coffman. They even had Lyle Coffman of Texas's driver's license.
They had a very believable story for sure.

Mr. Lyle Coffman,
Tel: +44 702 406 2089, +447035962694
Address: 25 Highgate Hill, London, N19 59A, England

They also had an assistant named Richard Plant who picked up the funds in London.

It seems their scam is in London and Nigeria.

I hope they catch these scumbags.

We have not been in New York due to business. Myself, my husband and my children have relocated to England, so we will be given out the apartment for a long duration at $900 /month rate (All Utilities included). Our priority is taking a responsible, careful, understanding and reasonable tenant that will take good care of the property, since we will be away for most of the period.

The rental agreement will contain issues like;

rental payments
duration of lease
parking
subletting
damage to premises
painting
pets
payment of utilities
lockouts
right of inspection
deposit refunds
terminating the lease

We do not have time for games so we suggest that if you are not serious about the apartment, you try somewhere else. My time is very valuable and my husband is a very busy person but he will like to still speak with you over the telephone before any arrangement for you to inspect the apartment because we cannot just give attention to everyone that is interested in the apartment. My husband's full names are Nicholas Parks, Telephone (+447024062089)011447024062089 or (+447035962694)011447035962694. Call only if you are serious about taken the apartment and let us know how long you will like to have the apartment to help us make our decision. If satisfied, we can discuss on how to get the document and the keys of the house to you to inspect. In your response, tell us a little more about yourself like your names, current address, your present occupation, marital status, if you like pets and why you want to take the apartment?

As soon as we hear from you, we will contact you with more details.

Thanks,

Jennifer Parks

Same phone number in England but different names. I have pasted the email I just received from them: Thanks for your response. We, Nicholas & Jennifer Parks are the (Landlord) owners of the listed apartment and wish to inform you that the apartment at 75 Henry St, Brooklyn NY 11201; Cross Street: Pineapple street (Interior: 825 sqft. (approx.), Neighborhood: Brooklyn Heights) is still available and belongs to my husband and I. We apologize for the slight delay in responding to your enquiry. We were just informed that our representative just suffered a cardiac arrest last night while coming from his home in LA so we are handling the leasing ourselves.
