How to Spot a Scam

Beware of Emails from Fresnomail.com

A Craigslist user sent this piece of intel. It appears that scam artists prefer to use fresnomail.com. If you receive an offer from anyone with fresnomail.com at the end of their email be very cautious.

7/1/2008
I just got a response from Lauretta Coronado that is word-for-word the message sent to by Robert Adams. Her email address is fresnomail.com too, I did a quick google search and it seems like a lot of spammers use fresnomail.com. Thanks for setting up this site.

Thank you for posting this information. I was approached by Derek Morgan@fresnomail.com about the item I am looking to sell on Craigslist. He proposed to complete the transaction in the exact way you outlined in your message.
Thanks so much!

Glad to have found this site. I posted an ad for two chairs on CL this morning, and got a response from a Robert Phillips, with an email address of Honest12@fresnomail.com. Anyone who feels the need to advertise themselves as 'honest' becomes immediately suspicious, lol!

Needless to say, I deleted and blocked ol' Bob. He also had the nerve to tell me he's hard of hearing, and thusly was unable to speak over a telephone connection.

Beware of Breezewalter0039@fresnomail.com
also he switched over to breezewalter01@gmail.com

This was also a craigslist scam.(Philadelphia)

Glad I found this website. I just got an email from lauretta coronado about a appliance I was selling on CL.

I have also gotten two responses from fresnomail. I'm waiting to see if they are legit or not. HOWEVER, on another item I was selling on CL, I got the following set of emails from one Tyler Skall at a gmail account:

1)Item Still For Sale ?

(I replied in the affirmative.)

2)How are you doing? I would like to let you know that I have gone through your posting and ready to buy it. As far as there will not be any repairs on it, I am willing to offer you a sum of $170 for the item so that it could be packed properly, and the payment will be made through (USPS Money Order, delivery of cash) (Standard 2 Days delivery Service including money order tracking number provided by the USPS).. I am purchasing it for my friend's daughter wedding which coming up on the 19th July, 2008.

To proceed with the payment I will need your mailing address, city, zip code, state and likewise phone number. I also have a prepaid account with UPS or DHL which will take care of the shipping charge, so you will not need to pay for shipment. I will be looking forward to hearing you...ASAP

(Who goes on CL to buy a used home theater system as a wedding present, offering almost the full retail price PLUS shipping??? (Note: I was only asking $100, and it doesn't take $70 to pack it properly.) Also, all of the seemingly contradictory statements about the payment style and strange verbiage tipped me off, so I asked where he was located.)

3)Ohio and i will be handling the shipping myself via my account with UPS or DHL so, kindly get back to me with your full name and address so that i can proceed with the payment and you can get the item ship out today .... ok???

(The slightly more aggressive tone of this email and his uncertainty how he wanted it shipped clenched my decision to end the transaction by telling him I only dealt with local buyers.)

Definately a scammer! And to think I felt bad about how quirky she acted because I thought she was disabled. Totally weak.

Thank you for this information. I posted an ad on CL yesterday and got an email from Lauretta Coronado. She used 2 emails addresses (godisable18@fresnomail.com AND laurettacoronado1@gmail.com). Here is the 2nd email that she sent:

Yup, I got a message from Lauretta Coronado too, word for word the same as above, including the hearing impaired stuff . . . kind of a tip-off when she said she couldn't take phone calls as she was hearing impaired but then said, "hope to hear from you soon." Slip-up much? I reported her to Craigslist.

It's amazing! And the phone number is 809 area code which perhaps will charge the unfortunate person calling it an exorbitant amount of money.

Thanks for having a place to warn people of scammers. This was my first time posting on craigslist, but it's funny that this guy is doing exactly what craigslist warns you about!!

THIS IS REALLY SCARY!!! I posted on Craig's List and not even five minutes had passed before I received an email from S. Lauretta Coronado with the email address inlovs45@fresnomail.com, saying she wanted to purchase the items immediately. BEWARE!!!!! Thanks for the info!

Anonymous said...

I contacted craigslist because these scammers FLAG all of your postings and every time you repost they flag you again!!! Craigslist hasn't responded -- they say that only 2% of posts are wrongly flagged -- everything I've posted in the past week -- over 30 items (We're moving), were flagged repeatedly. It's so frustrating.

Another Scammer on CL:

Dan Spurlock dnsprlck00@gmail.com

Hello
I appreciate your response to my inquiry. Am interested in buying
it from you. I would love to come and check it myself but I just got
married and am presently on an honeymoon trip to Hawaii with my wife.
I would love a surprise change of furniture in our home on our return.
Pls do withdraw the advert from craigslists as i dont mind adding $50
for you to do that, so i can be rest assured that the item is held for
me. I should believe it is in good condition as stated. I will be
making the payment via a Certified Check, which my secretary will
mail across to you. I'll be picking the item from you with the aid of
my mover. My Mover will be coming to pick it from you once the
Certified Check has been cashed. Pls I will need both your full name
and physical address along with you phone number to issue out the
payment.
I await your urgent response.
thanks

Thanks for this blog....it motivated me to start my own. I posted a few items on craigslist and got two scammers immediately. Ray Parks and Billy Drake. Their tone and outlandish requests are ridiculous. I called the bank to investigate cashiers checks and certified checks...they can take weeks to clear. The FBI laughed when I called them and said it is so common. I guess cash is the only way to go.

Hello,
I appreciate your response to my inquiry.I am interested in buying the item and i am ok with the description and condition and i am also satisfied with the price($450).I would have love to come and check it myself but am not chance now, because I just got married and am presently on honeymoon trip to Hawaii with my wife and I would love a surprise change of furniture in our home on our return because my wife like surprises. My Mover will come for the
pick up once the Certified Check has been cashed and i will like to complete this transaction before Wednesday the 20th of August. If this arrangement is ok by you kindly send me both your name and full address to post the payment immediately and i would appreciate you include your phone#,i.e.... (1)..Your full name , (2)..Your full home address or your office address, (3)..your zip code , (4)...your phone number to contact you and please i don't want a P.O BOX address because i want the payment to get to you at your house or your office address to make the transaction fast. Thanks and get back to me with the full info as soon as possible. Thanks

I noticed that the English seemed badly broken and grammer was way off, not something that I would expect from someone who has movers and can afford a trip to Hawaii.

Got the same "Lorretta" response to my listing for a bed frame, except this was from Ray Parks at a gmail address. The text of the email was identical, however. I was a little late in investigating it, and sent him back my address...ugh. Hopefully it turns out to be harmless. I tried emailing him a number of other times, and havn't gotten a response.

This scam is still going, although the scammers are using gmail accounts. The emails never include any specifics about the item you are selling, and the second email will ask you to ship the item even if it's obviously (to a literate human being) not shippable at all.

My new rule is not to respond to any emails that do not include at least one word specific to the item I am selling. If the email could apply to anyone's listing, it's almost certainly an invitation to a Nigerian-style scam.

I did email back my address and cell number despite being a little put off by the grammar skills. This is the email I got in return.

I have since receive the confirmation from my secretary that the
payment as been issued out and was mailed by the United Parcel
Service. It will be delivered to your address a day from now according
to the courier ,but to my greatest surprise the draft was issued out
to the sum of $2500 instead of the actual cost of my purchase . She
claimed that i requested for that amount to be issued out to you but
am very sure i only made a request for just the cost of my
purchase. This is a terrible mistake and i was just informed about this
so please once the check is delivered please take it to your Bank

You will then deduct the cost of my purchase plus an extra $100 to

Well, sorry I'm not that dumb. I think I'll take the previous advice and if the email doesn't mention what I am selling, I won't respond. And no, I'm not cashing anybody's stupid check or wiring money to anyone.

Thanks for this site. I found this blog when researching an e-mail address after I received a suspicious response to a post on CL. It was from Catherine Edwards (catheedward036@fresnomail.com). Based on what I have read on this site, i will not be corresponding with this person. Thanks for the info!

Received 1 email following listing on CL, 2 other e-mails from her from 2 accounts before I decided to check up on it. Thanks for this Blog site.... Her replies were the same style as the others with one being fresnomail.com and the other being ymail.com Beware name Catherine Edward

"Thank you very much for t"he response, Anyways, I'll be mailing a check via my Bank to you due to my job transfer and shortness of time. However, to ease the pick up, I'll be engaging the services of a mover to do that after the check has been cashed. I'll need this details below to mail out the payment to you asap...

• The Full name on the Check
• Mailing address be it residential or office
• Cell phone # and
• Final Price of the item

I'll appreciate it if the item is kept for me. Thank you for the understanding.

Glad I thought about checking up first.

Good luck everyone,

It is almost exactly the same as some of the above messages except for the e-mail address and the name. Sounds fake to me.

Thanks for keeping this updated on craigslist scams. I just feel bad for some of the old folk out there who stand little chance against this intolerable form of humanity. I have recieved the same email in the washington area from a deerejjohn@aol.com. Watch out.

Anonymous said...

I just got one from Robert Leo with the email adddy laurettacolorado@yahoo.com but whats even weirder is that when I went to reply the email address changed to bostonmail03@gmail.com. I have a yahoo account and it was doing it automatically ever time I hit reply. So I sent an email back to the original yahoo sender and to the gmail account. No reply as of yet and that was an hour ago. Though I did sign the email with something to the effect of "God is watching you!!!!". :-)

Had an item listed on Craigs list and was contacted by Mrs Marybeth Toneman with the same story of being deaf and she wanted my item and all my info so she could send a check. Will contact the FBI tomorrow. These people have my name, address and phone number!

Anonymous said...

Watch out Mary Jane Toneman is hitting Massachusetts now with the same old scam of wanting your item from CL and is hearing impaired and wants all your info to send a cashiers check....You do know what the scam is don't you? They send a cashiers check for more money than you are asking for the TV so they ask you to cash the cashiers check which takes a long time to clear and in the mean time they ask you to deposit their check and wire the difference to the moving company they will use to pick up the item. Then their cashiers check bounces and you are left holding the bag!

Anonymous said...

I had posted an item on CL and the initial response seemed OK. The next one asked for name and address and that someone would pick up the item. What I noted also in the second one is they told me to delete the posting from CL.
Also, I Googled the email address (it was a yahoo account) and it came from California and I am in Massachusetts. To ship the $200 item would cost hundreds of dollars.

Thank you so much for this information. I receieved a response from Deerejjohn@aol.com for a bed I had on Craig's List. He also stated that he is hearing impaired. My dad is a police detective and picked this up right away. We are going to look into it further. He sent me two money grams for $1700 when my bed was only $400. I hope he gets caught and noone else got scammed.

Here is the second email he sent with a slightly different twist:
Good day and how is your day ? I just received the confirmation from the Bank that the payment as been issued out and was mailed by the United Parcel Service. It will be delivered to your address a day from now according to the courier ,but to my greatest surprise the draft was issued out for my monthly pay check $2,350 instead of the actual cost of my purchase .
The Bank claimed that i requested for my monthly pay check to be issued out to you but am very sure i only made a request for the cost of the goods to be made out to your name .This is a terrible mistake and i was just informed about this so please once the check is delivered please take it to your Bank and have it cashed as advised by the accounting officer at the Bank.
You will then deduct the cost of my purchase .The rest of the fund should be sent to my mover via Western union the same day you do receive the payment so that my mover can make the trip over for the pick at once. **I will need your immediate response via email assuring me that i can trust you to handle this with care and have the remaining fund returned appropriately.I am hearing impaired and will hope that your intentions remains noble through out the duration of this transaction**

This same thing happened to me this week. I am so worried now as I did give my name, address, and telephone number. How should I go about reporting this. This e-mail was also a hearing impaired and was signed by Jessica. Her e-mail was compassionate4000@gmail.com

Anonymous said...

If the only info you gave them was your name, address, and phone number I would not worry too much. That is all information that could be obtained through the internet or a phone book. It seems that most scammers are not even located within the country. And you can always get your e-mail and phone number changed. When I first started using craigslist recently I received 3 immediate responses to one of my posts from scammers. I was new to CL and did not realize at first that they were scammers. Three of them continued to contact me after I told them the item was unavailable. Of those 3, 2 of them told me they were hearing impaired. ALL of them stated they would be sending me a certified check.

This is the set of e-mails I received from the first scammer named "Mary" whose e-mail address is: maryclerk008@gmail.com

Hello,

mary is my name,Am interested in buying your item listed on CL, Please
let me know if its still for sale and perhaps in good condition. I
await your response and i will proceed with purchase if its still for
sale and in good condition.
Thanks God bless

(I replied that the item was still available and in good condition)

Thank for the prompt response to my mail. I will be buying from you so please kindly withdraw the advert from CRAIGSLIST,Please be informed that i will be paying with a certified check from my Bank as i just moved here from Phoenix Arizona on a job transfer.
I will need the following details to mail the payment later in the day ...
1.Name to be on the payment:........... 2.Home address Not P.O Box:..................
3.City:................... 4.Zip Code :.................
5.State:......................
....6.Cell phone #:......................
I am completely satisfied with the advert and the payment will be delivered within 2-3 working days.** I use a hearing impaired phone # and will receive your calls via email.
Thank You hoping to read from you soon.
mary clerk.

(since I was new to craigslist I DID send her the info *stupid, I know*...but then she sends me this...)

Hello There,
Please, you have been sent you a check for your payment, but there is a mistake on the check sent to
you.You are supposed to be sent an Exact amount of the item i am buying from you,But they sent me a
notification that they have sent you a check with the sum of $2,500 and that was because they misinterpreted
me.
Please Let me trust you here, when you receive the check, kindly help me send the excess amount back to
me.I am supposed to use the money for something else. Please let me know there is no problem about it.I
will be waiting to read from you as soon as you get these message
Thank you
mary clerk.

(Now, I may have been a bit naive at first, but I am not a moron. It was very obvious to me at this point that this is a scam.)

This is the set of e-mails I received from the second scammer named "Victor" whose e-mail address is: victordonald001@gmail.com

Hello ,

Am highly interested in your item listed for sale.I will like to know
if the item still available and to know the present conditions? Thanks
I wait your quick response.

(I wrote item was UNAVAILABLE and yet they wrote...)

Hello,

Thanks for the response, like I said am highly interested in this
item,I will be glad if you could please withdraw the advert from
Craigslist as am totally committed in buying it . I will also like to
inform you that my mode of payment will be via Certified check .I will
need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate
the mailing of the check. It will be delivered by the United Parcel
Service within 2-3 days. Please note 'United Parcel Service' do not

2.Home address
3.Mobile #

This is the set of e-mails I received from the third scammer named "Shan" whose e-mail address is: s.wes112@yahoo.com) wrote:

Hello,

(I wrote back to say item was UNAVAILABLE and still they wrote back saying...)

Hi,

Thanks for alerting me on the availability of the items,i am indeed very grateful.I run a private furniture warehouse where i shop and store furniture for future supply to companies on demand. As a result of this i buy furniture's in bulk.Due to high demand of supply i travel to different States where i can get more items to purchase though i have engaged the services of a mover who will come for the pick up of the items on my behalf because i am currently away.I will send a certified check through my Bank to cover the cost of the items. The check will be delivered to you by a reliable courier company within 2-3 working days. Please do provide me with your full mailing address, and also indicate your final price, the name that should be on check and finally a telephone number.Kindly delete the posting because am serious in buying these items. When the funds clears then we can arrange for the pick up.

Regards,
Shan

I would prettymuch assume that anytime someone is "out of town", "hearing impaired", asking for your personal info, not local, or not paying with cash that it is a scam...especially if you already told them the item isn't available anymore and they are still e-mailing you pressing for information!!!

I haven't received a check yet, but I replied to the email requesting an address to send it back. I'm going to report this incident to my local Criminal Investigative Division.

I am so glad I found this site. I had a weird feeling about this reply, but I felt so bad for the hearing impaired buyer, that I almost forked over $2400 of my own money.

Here's how it started: BEWARE OF LISA BRUISE (b.lisa0000@gmail.com)
Hello,
My name is Mrs.Lisa Bruise.I saw your advertised item on C......LIST and am interested in buying the item, Please let me know if it is still available for sale and perhaps in good condition.
I am waiting for your response to my mail and I will also proceed with purchase if it is still for sale and also in good condition as I have requested earlier on.
Thanks so much and I will be waiting for your response asap
God bless.

My regards.

THEN:
Thanks so much for the prompt response to my mail.
I will be buying from you as am interested in the item and I will like you to please kindly withdraw the advert from C..LIST.And please also be informed that i will be paying you with a certified check from my Bank as i just moved to this my new home from Aspen Hill Of Maryland on a job transfer which I just got.I will need the following details to be put on the payment as soon as possible.

6.Cell phone #_______________.

I will make arrangements for the pick up as soon as you have your money.
I am completely satisfied with the advert and the payment will be delivered within 2-3? working days.** I use a hearing impaired phone # and will receive your calls via email **

AND THEN THE KICKER:
I just receive the confirmation from the Bank that the payment as been issued out and was mailed by the United Parcel Service. It will be delivered to your address anytime from now from now according to the courier but to my greatest surprise the draft was issued out for my monthly pay check of $2,550 instead of the actual cost of my purchase.

I will need your immediate response via email assuring me that i can trust you to handle this with care and have the remaining fund returned appropriately.I am earing impaired and will hope that your intentions remains noble though out the duration.

DON'T BE FOOLED, like I was, preying on the heart strings of innocent Craigslist sellers. Always request face to face meetings and cash only. This was a Boston Craigslist posting, so it is happening everywhere

I appreciate your response to my inquiry. Am interested in buying
it from you. I would love to come and check it myself but I just got
married and am presently on an honeymoon trip to Hawaii with my wife.
I would love a surprise change of furniture in our home on our
return.Pls do withdraw the advert from craigslists as i dont mind
adding $50 for you to do that, so i can be rest assured that the item
is held for me. I should believe it is in good condition as stated.
I will be making the payment via a Money order, which my secretary
will mail across to you. I'll be picking the item from you with the
aid of my mover. My Mover will be coming to pick it from you once the
Money order has been cashed. Pls I will need both your full name and
physical address along with your phone number to issue out the
payment.

await your urgent response.
thanks

I received a similar email from Deerejjohn@aol.com regarding a CL item. "Am hearing impaired but can be flexible to make this work so please you could remove the Ad. I will issue a certified money order in the amount of $350 in payment of the Dining room Table, while a mover could come to pick up at a convenient later day . I will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the payment
(1)Your full name: (2) Contact address where payment will be sent to:
(3) Tell/cell numbers:
I Await your response as soon as possible.
Best Regards.
John Deere"

I was also asked to remove this posting right away (what is the gain in that?). There were a couple of things that didn't quite sit well with me so I asked if we could deliver it for him instead but I never received any response back. Fortunately I paid attention to the "little voice" that was telling me this wasn't quite right.

Second reply email from Jessy Spencey dotman1000@hotmail.com:
Thanks for your prompt response.

I will be buying from you so please kindly withdraw the advert from
C...LIST. Please be informed that i will be paying with a certified
check from my Bank as i just moved here from IOWA on
a job transfer....

I will need the following details to mail the
payment as soon as possible..

1.Name to be on the payment__________________2..
Home address_____________ City
____________State_____________ Zip Code________________3.Cell phone
#______________________

I will make arrangements for the pick up as soon as you have your money.

I am completely satisfied with the advert and the payment will be
delivered within 2-3? working days.** I use a hearing impaired phone #
and will receive your calls via email.

Scam artist used the same hearing impaired and other same formats as mentioned from the other contributors on this site. What I also noticed was that his reply names are similar (Jessy Spencey, Jes Spencer) and he uses different email address on his reply emails to the same product.

Thank you so much for this site! I'm glad I found it! You have saved me from potiential trouble from this scam artist.

Got the hearing impaired word for word. They're using the name Thomas Axelson. Sealand91@hotmail.com is the email. Beware!
