Christopher & Rachel Clark Apartment Scam

Using Craigslist can be a great way to find a new apartment. However it can also be a place where people pose as landlords in an attempt to lie, cheat, and steal. Case in point Christopher and Rachel Clark. These factitious landlords claim to live in England while their New York apartment sits uninhabited. Out of left field their "representative" Simon Peterson was suddenly (insert non-believable story here-this time he was) taken ill and is presently in Chicago.

For a very small deposit, the perspective renter simply wires money to Christopher or Rachel, or maybe even another third party, with the promise of receiving keys to the apartment in order to look around and make a decision. By now a giant red flag should have gone up. There never is an apartment to rent, these con artists simply want their victims to wire them a deposit.

Names: Christopher & Rachel Clark

Thanks for your response. My name is Rachel Clark and I wish to inform you that the apartment at 199 State St Brooklyn, NY 11201 (1,653 Sqft (approx.), Cross st: (Court Street) Neighborhood: Brooklyn Heights) is still available and belongs to my husband and I. We apologize for the slight delay in responding to your enquiry. We just received some news from our representative ( Samuel Jenkins) who is presently in Chicago had a little accident so we are handling the leasing ourselves.

However, we are very busy people and we will not like to take much of your time, therefore I will go straight to breaking down the terms and conditions that apply to the apartment.

My husband and myself have our preferences in given out the apartment. This means we could be a bit choosy but we apologise in advance if it seems to be rather harsh. The apartment is furnished as you can see from the picture attached but most of the furnitures has been moved into the store room. The furnitures could be replaced if you like. We are looking out for a responsible person or couple, they will accept full responsibility for property damages during their stay. Pets are allowed and we may be given out the apartment at a very low and reasonable price but we are given it out for a minimum period of at least 3 months starting February/March or preferably a longer lease period to as much as 5 years lease. Since we cleared the apartment for renovation on August, we have not been in New York due to business. Myself, my husband and my children have relocated to England, so we will be given out the apartment for a long duration at $950 /month rate (All Utilities included). Our priority is taking a responsible, careful, understanding and reasonable tenant that will take good care of the property, since we will be away for most of the period.

The rental agreement will contain issues like;

rental payments
duration of lease
parking
subletting
damage to premises
painting
pets
payment of utilities
lockouts
right of inspection
deposit refunds
terminating the lease

We do not have time for games so we suggest that if you are not serious about the apartment, you try somewhere else. My time is very valuable and my husband is a very busy person but he will like to still speak with you over the telephone before any arrangement for you to inspect the apartment because we cannot just give attention to everyone that is interested in the apartment. My husband's full names are Christopher Clark, Telephone (+447024062089)011447024062089 or (+447035962694)011447035962694. Call only if you are serious about taken the apartment and let us know how long you will like to have the apartment to help us make our decision. If satisfied, we can discuss on how to get the document and the keys of the house to you to inspect. In your response, tell us a little more about yourself like your names, current address, your present occupation, marital status, if you like pets and why you want to take the apartment?

As soon as we hear from you, we will contact you with more details.

I fell victim to this scam and feel like an absolute and total idiot. I became in contact with them on Feb. 9 and checked them out the same day--before any of these blogs were posted and found them to at least sound legit. Had I redone my homework before now, I would not have given them any money at all. I thought I had done my homework, I really felt as though I knew what I was doing and now I am paying the consequences. I was so wrong. I want to prevent their deception from harming anyone else.

I received the exact same email, but for an apartment at 379 1st Avenue:

From there I received emails requesting copies of my ID and a $220 insurance fee for the keys and documents to be shipped to me. I even spoke to her husband "Christopher" on the phone a couple of times. All seemed right and I sent the $220.

Then they asked that I send a security deposit, first month and last month's rent as they had emailed me the lease as an attachment. Again, I thought, well this is a done deal it seems. I sent $3600.

Before I knew it, they came back to me saying there was a small issue because a close family friend had also wanted the apartment for their son who just got accepted to Columbia University. The "family friends" offered two years worth of rent upfront. I couldn't compete with that and "Christopher" asked for four more months upfront and the apartment would be mine as I was his (not his wife's) preference as tenant. I hesitated but feeling as though the apartment would slip away from under me, I sent $4800.

This is where we are today. I found their names on a list of aliases of internet schemes. I've seen the email I thought was only sent to me, sent countless times over with countless aliases. I've reported this to the FBI, NYPD, Western Union, and even Interpol. This MUST be stopped. I lost a huge sum of money and it hurts a lot right now, but I do not want anyone else to feel the way I do and be taken like this.

Since my last wire transfer, they have not returned my emails and the number I used to speak to "Christopher" a handful of times is now a permanent busy signal: 011447024062089. I even received this passport as "proof" of his identity. Although he said he was in London and sounded British on the phone, I assumed he perhaps had dual citizenship, given his colorful story of frequently being in the US for work. This is the passport of "Christopher Clark": http://i42.tinypic.com/veccco.jpg

As stupid as I feel I hope this will make a difference and possibly help put a stop to one tiny branch of internet fraud. I may be $8,620 poorer and it was a massive blow to me (I'm 23 and work a $38,000/yr job in NYC), but I am strong and determined to find justice.

Ugh, here is another one...

http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/abo/1051027095.html

They emailed me back with a similar response as those posted above- I'm glad I googled her name. It smelled of scam- is there a way to report them?

Another scammer is Michelle Arjona-Diaz. She never posts an ad about her place, she only responds to the ad in the "housing wanted". She says the going rate for a studio in this area/building is 1700 p/m, however, but she would consider whatever you quoted on your message. The rent would include the utilities ( water & electricity ).
She says she is moving to Panama to work for her brother and she is renting out her apartment at 25 Tudor City. All she wants is a deposit of $1,400 so she will keep the apartment for you, but before the move-in date you will find out the apartment is not for rent.

One thing that set me off was the inconsistencies in the emails.

"My injured friend is in Houston." Next Email he is in Chicago.

And real people doing business don't tell me there personal business plans. IE: we were planning on selling it, but then in our 5 yrs plan..

haha get the F out of here

Searching by owner for apartments in NYC between $700 and $950, almost every responded to email bears the scam profile: i.e. the owner is overseas and someone just had an accident :)
Here's an apparently new variant:
And a familiar one but from Andrea Wells.

I am in receipt of your forwarded response from craigslist stating your interest in my apartment. My name is Kristopher Arden Houser and I own the apartment on West 28th Street, New York NY 10001 (Interior: 1080 sq. ft. (approx.), Neighborhood: Chelsea.

I am into building construction and I just relocated to the UK with my wife and daughter recently due to business. We have a contract here that would last for 8 yrs. Thus the minimum period which we intend to lease out the apartment is 5 months starting from April while the maximum is 8 years. Hence you are guaranteed to stay in the apartment for as long as you like between 4 months and 8yrs.

The utilities included in the $750 monthly rent are gas, electricity and internet access is cable ready in the apartment. The unit is a one bedroom apartment with store room where you can keep your furnitures or ours. The unit is its both a walk up and elevator building.

The apartment is furnished and in excellent condition as you can see from the picture attached herein but most of the furniture has been move into the store room. The furniture could be replaced if you like.

We have received a healthy number of replies regarding this ad. Therefore only serious and responsible tenants will be given attention.

You may conatct me via telephone to touch base before we proceed with viewing arrangements.

Send in all necessary details I need to know about yourself which will convince me that you the perfect tenant. These details should include your full names, current address, your present occupation, marital status, if you like pets and why you want to take the apartment. References will be appreciated if any.

I look forward to your reply.

Regards
Kris.

Thanks for your response. My name is Andrea Wells and I wish to inform you that the apartment at 84 Front St, Brooklyn, NY 11201 (729 Sqft (approx.), Cross st: (Washington & Adams Streets) Neighborhood: Vinegar Hill) is still available and belongs to my husband and I. We apologize for the slight delay in responding to your enquiry. We just received some news from our representative ( Jason Park) who is presently in Boston had a little accident so we are handling the leasing ourselves.

However, we are very busy people and we will not like to take much of your time, therefore I will go straight to breaking down the terms and conditions that apply to the apartment.

My husband and I have our preferences in giving out the apartment. This means we could be a bit choosy but we apologize in advance if it seems to be rather harsh. The apartment is furnished as you can see from the pictures attached but most of the furniture have been moved into the storage. The furniture could be replaced if you like. We are looking out for a responsible person or couple, they will accept full responsibility for property damages caused during their stay. Pets are allowed and we may be given out the apartment at a very low and reasonable price but we are given it out for a minimum period of at least 3 months starting May/June or preferably a longer lease period to as much as 5 years lease. Since we cleared the apartment for renovation last August, we have not been in New York due to business. Myself, my husband and my children have relocated to England, so we will be given out the apartment for a long duration at $850 /month rate (All Utilities included). Our priority is taking a responsible, careful, understanding and reasonable tenant that will take good care of the property, since we will be away for most of the period.

The rental agreement will contain issues like;

rental payments
duration of lease
parking
subletting
damage to premises
painting
pets
payment of utilities
lockouts
right of inspection
deposit refunds
terminating the lease

We do not have time for games so we suggest that if you are not serious about the apartment, you try somewhere else. My time is very valuable and my husband is a very busy person but he will like to still speak with you over the telephone before any arrangement for you to inspect the apartment because we cannot just give attention to everyone that is interested in the apartment. My husband's full names are Nichloas Wells, Telephone (+447024062089)011447024062089 or (+447035962694)011447035962694. I am so happy I found this website before I made a HUGE mistake. I actually found the site when I googled a phone number given to me by people I have been in contact with via craigslist. This is the email I received regarding an apartment on the Upper East Side:

Thanks for your response. My name is Mary Zatarski and I wish to inform you that the apartment on 118 East 60th Street, NY10022(940 Sqft (approx.), Cross st: (Park Avenue) Neighborhood: Upper East Side) is still available and belongs to my husband and I. We apologize for the slight delay in responding to your enquiry. Since I've already replied I am actually interested in seeing what their response is now that I know that they're scam artists. I guess when something seems to good to be true it usually is.

I just got the same response as above. Mary Zatarski & Luke Zatarski... what goes around comes around.

They are still around with different aliases - Jennifer and Nicholas Parks. This it the email I received from them. It sounded suspicious so I googled and I found this sight.

Thanks for your response. We, Nicholas & Jennifer Parks are the (Landlord) owner of the listed apartment and wish to inform you that the apartment at 205 3rd Avenue , New York, NY 10003; Cross Street: E 18th St. (Interior: 560 sqft. (approx.), Neighborhood: Gramercy) is still available and belongs to my husband and I. We apologize for the slight delay in responding to your enquiry. We were just informed that our representative just suffered a cardiac arrest last night while coming from his home in LA, California so my husband will need to rush down to NY to take care of the lease based on an appointment.

My husband works on the floors of the London Stock Exchange as a broker. Due to our tight schedule, we will not like to take much time on the lease process, therefore I will proceed to the viewing and lease arrangement.

My husband and I have our preferences in giving out the apartment. We could be a bit choosy but we apologise in advance if it seems to be rather harsh. If you are moving in with your own furniture, you are to let us know so we can make provision for that. There is a storage room in the unit where our furniture could be kept. The apartment is in pristine condition, there is a full kitchen with washer and dryer and living area. Secure parking space is available for $90 a month if you like. We are looking out for a very clean and responsible person, preferably single. If we accept any married couple or single parent, three kids max. In such case, you will accept full responsibility for property damages during your stay. Pets are allowed.

The apartment is at a reduced and stable price but we are given it out for a minimum period of at least 3 months starting August/Sept. The lease is flexible (3 months, 6 months, 1year, 2years) or a longer lease period to as much as 5 years lease period. Since we cleared the apartment for renovation first week of April, we have not been in New York due to business. My husband bought the apartment due to his business in NY but we recently moved to London, so we will be giving out the apartment for a long duration at $1200 month rate (Utilities included). Our priority is taking a responsible, careful, understanding and reasonable tenant that will take good care of the property, since we will be away for most of the period.

Pets are allowed and we may be given out the apartment at a very low and reasonable price but we are given it out for a minimum period of at least 3 months starting October/November or preferably a longer lease period to as much as 5 years lease. Since we cleared the apartment for renovation last August, we have not been in New York due to business. Myself, my husband and my children have relocated to England, so we will be given out the apartment for a long duration at $1150/month rate (All Utilities included). Our priority is taking a responsible, careful, understanding and reasonable tenant that will take good care of the property, since we will be away for most of the period.

The rental agreement will contain issues like;

rental payments
duration of lease
parking
subletting
damage to premises
painting
pets
payment of utilities
lockouts
right of inspection
deposit refunds
terminating the lease

We do not have time for games so we suggest that if you are not serious about the apartment, you try somewhere else. My time is very valuable and my husband is a very busy person but he will like to still speak with you over the telephone before any arrangement for you to inspect the apartment because we cannot just give attention to everyone that is interested in the apartment. My husband's full names are Christopher Haramis, Telephone (+447011163740)011447011163740.

Thanks,

Jessica
