How to Spot a Scam

Tutor Scam

Another variation of the wire fraud scam comes to us today from Bakersfield, California that is targeting teachers.

An ad is placed from out of state asking for tutoring help for a child saying that child will be in town for a few days and in this case offering $400. When the teacher or whomever replies to the add is sent a $1500 check and asked to wire back $1100.

Big 'ol red flag right there.

Never wire anything. Local only and cash only if at all.

If you had found the ad on Craigslist and the story goes something like this:

His name is CHARLES DESMOND, has two kids (ages 8 and 5), originally from Spain, but currently residing in the UK. He is seeking an English tutor for his kids following their move to (blank) city this summer. Uses the e-mail address goodalliance2008@gmail.com or manneredkid@gmail.com . And his e-mails says:

"I want to pay you $1400 in advance before our arrival to the US. I will send you one of my US cashier check of $4200 which i bought the last time i came to the US.I will write the check payable to your name so you could cash it at your bank.I am sending you that much money because of my dad's sickness which i spent lots of money to rescue his life because he is so precious to me. My dad got sick couple of weeks ago which made me spent lots of money taking care of his medical bills. The cashier check is for US which is cashable at your bank and its not cashable here in UK. As soon as you receive the check, take it to the bank and cash it and deduct $1400. Then send the balance of the money to my ticket agent in London so i can buy the family ticket to fly there by June."

IT'S A SCAM!!!

Another scam off of a London based home tutoring service.

Dear Rep AP648,

Thank you for the information's.

This is to notify you that there was a mixed up at the accounting department with the payment sent to you. The payment that was sent to you is $3200 and the weekly payment should be $350 and not $3200 that was sent to you. The $3200 was supposed to be sent to our travel agent.

As soon as you receive the payment, Take the payment to the bank immediately and cash it. Then send $2850 back to the travel agent through western union money transfer so that he can book a flight for your student to come over to USA

Here is our Travel Agent's information to send the money to him

First Name: Rodney

Last Name: Blank

Address: 10 Robin Court, London, SE12 9QW

As soon as you send the money, email me the control number given to you at western union and the actual amount sent after deducting western union charges to send the money. Then wait till you receive further instruction. Hope to hear back from you soon.

INCASE YOU DONT KNOW ANY WESTERN UNION OFFICE AROUND YOU, I CAN SEARCH ONLINE FOR THE NEAREST WESTERN UNION AGENT IN YOUR LOCATION WHERE YOU CAN SEND THE MONEY.

Important Notice: Please email me back so I can be sure you receive and understand this message.

Regards,

Owen Simpson

I stupidly sent them back the info- I figure I'll just throw out the check when they send it?

I also just almost fell for one of these, already provided my address and am now expecting the bogus cheque. I am new to tutoring, was very eager to acquire new students, and was excited about getting such a large chunk of lessons:( There was something off about the guy's emails to begin with, but what really set off my suspicions was that he so eagerly sent off the advance payment cheque, even though I first suggested that cash payment lesson-by-lesson when his son arrives would be the safest option for both of us.

Don't know if it's worth it to turn the cheque over to the police once I receive it? I know nothing will be done about it, but I feel like I want to at least report something instead of just throwing it out.

Anonymous said...

Being aware of scam practices, I would never go ahead and wire any money back to the scammer after depositing a cheque. However, that would not have protected me from trouble with the law had I deposited the cheque, even after a teller's approval. Something should be done about the bank system being more vigilant and informed when it comes to verifying cheque authenticity, which is what their customers are trusting them to do.

I just received this scam after responding to a tutoring request in the South Florida listing.

I just graduated from college in December, and decided to place a tutoring ad on Craigslist to earn extra money, as there are no open positions for full time teachers in the middle of the school year. I am new to tutoring, and do not have any friends who have tutored, so while I knew to be very cautious of people responding to my ad, I was unaware of this particular scam you're all talking about. What kind of person would target teachers in a scam? That's pretty low. Anyway, about a week after my posting an ad for tutoring at the elementary level, I received the following email three times in less than 10 minutes, which I thought was just some weird email glitch on the sender's side:

"Hello
I need a tutor that can give my daughter this lesson, any of this subject.
English
Maths
Music
Chemistry
Can wait to hear from you

Fred"

After I responded saying I may be able to help and asking for more information about the student, I received this email:

"Hello,
Am Mr Fred Klawitter from Paris Frane,my daughter will be coming
for a vacation in
the U.S,and i want her to be busy throughout because she is a bit
playful. Therefore, i just want to know maybe she can always come to you and
be her tutor so she can learn from you i mean you can give her any
lesson. If possible, please get back to me with the cost of your
teaching for the month i mean for the half for the Month of Februrary .
She will be coming to your home for 1 hour each day, I have scheduled
a guardian that will always drive her down to your place. My
daughter's name is Tara ,she is 12 years old. I want to know the
total amount for an hour each for the half month of Februrary So that
i can arrange for the payments.

she cant speak fluently
If its going to work, Kindly get back to me with the amount per each
for the total half month of Februrary

Mr Fred."

I definitely noticed the English was not quite right, but at first attributed it to the person's first language being French. (I have "ESL" relatives in Europe who sound like this in their emails to me.) So, I wrote back (giving no personal information about myself) asking for more information, and stating my hourly rate (even though it was included in my Craigslist ad). Parts of other bloggers' emails were exactly like mine, for example the part about the child being "playful" and in the U.S. for a vacation. A "guardian" was also mentioned.

Now that I've read the posts on this blog and others, I'll steer clear of this scammer. Thanks everyone! :)

ps: The person uses these email addresses: fredklaw@gmail.com, and klawitterfred1@gmail.com.

Received this one just today...what a crock of ----!

"Thanks for the reply. The position is still available and thanks for wanting to take my daughter for your subject. Its really amazing and she is very happy.

I want you to tell me when you will be available to take her the Lesson, Time & Days.

Also to tell you that we don't live in the states, We live in Japan and my Daughter will be coming to the states this week, also i want her to study more about what she need to know while she is in the states. She will be getting to the US on Friday ( 13th of February ) and the Lesson will start the following week.

About My Daughter: Her name is Charlene, she is very gentle girl and easy going.. She will be staying in ( San Diego with a Nanny ) The Nanny will always bring her for the Lesson. I am Originally from Hong Kong so my daughter English is not Fluent but understanding. She is wanting to study more in USA but would love for her to be having this lesson first till i get to work things out with the school she wants to study more.

I want you to know that i will be sending you the payment inform of MONEY ORDERS/CHECKS for the tutorial while i will also have to pay the Nanny that will be taking care of Charlene while she is there, so as soon as you get the Payment cashed, you will deduct cost of tutoring of the lesson ( 1st month ) and send the remaining balance to the Nanny that will be taking care of Charlene which the information will be giving to you later. The Lesson will be taking for 2 Months but I pay for 1st month and The other month will be pay as the Lesson goes and by then I would work out her school.

My question is what do i do with this fake certified check? Send it in to a bank? Response will be appreciated.

I replied to a tutor position for a 9 year old Danish boy named James and received an email back from 'danewills' also. A majority of the email from him was identical with phrases/paragraphs written above. I am disliking Craigslist more and more... :P

Scratch that...the above posted scam email is the exact email I received from 'Dane Wills.' "James" and all...except mine said he was nine. Stupid people.

Just received an almost identical email to the one Anonymous posted from Charles Desmond. I had responded to an ad on Craigslist for a tutor in Chicago. My guy's name was Luis Iniesta, also supposedly from Spain but now in the UK:

"I will send you one of my US cashier check of $1,999 which i bought the last time i came to the US. I will write the check payable to your name so you could cash it at your bank.

I am sending you that much money because of my step-dad's Alzheimer's disease.
My step-dad got sick couple of months ago which made me spent lots of money taking care of his medical bills.

The cashier check is for USA which is cashable at your bank and its not cashable here in UK.
As soon as you receive the check, take it to the bank and cash it and deduct $320 which is one week teaching charges with transport fee, also deduct $50 for the purchase of the teaching materials needed for the kid.
Please note that i will be responsible for your tax because i am employing you as a private tutor for my kid.

Then send the balance of the money to my ticket agent in London so i can buy the family flight ticket. We are coming from London, UK.

I will like to have your full name and address so that the check can be sent to you as soon as possible."

I cant believe this.. I nearly fell for it. Craigslist posting from an Azrael Lewis in Israel for his 10-year old daughter Jezebel. I have already sent my address and information - my question is, what if they mail me a check? What should I do? I am worried that these criminals have my address and phone number. Has anyone ever been hassled or threatened? I've already reported this to I3C or whatever its called - but I doubt anything will come of that. Should I go to local police if the check shows up?

and here are the two subsequent emails:

Hello ,

How you doing ? I received your email now for the tutor I want for my son..I have read through your resume and i must confess i am really contented with your qualifications.Let me start with telling you a little about my the nature of the job..You are going to be tutoring my son and he is a 7th grader. He is 12 years of age,his name is James. I hope you would be able to cope with him as he is a very playful boy.If yes ,I would like us to proceed with this .I would be paying you $50.00/ hr and you would be taking him 2 times a week.In which each day you would be taking him for 2hrs.So get back to me with the total fee for the subject which is Maths and English because I intend paying you altogether for 2 weeks ..I will like to have him tutored in a quite place probably in a library if there is any around you..I do think it is a good idea to meet at a library, it is a quiet atmosphere and has many academic resources should we need to look something up, plus in my experience it is good to get the student out of their house to put them in a focused productive mood and so that distractions won't present themselves... I would like you to draw a schedule when you would be available to teach him in a week and also I would like to know the subjects you would lecture him on each day ( I guess it should be 2 per day.. right ? ).
I would like to make this clear to you, we don't live in the states,my son is coming to the states and i intend to put him in care of a nanny which i will get in dew time. I don't want him to play all along that's the reason I am employing you. He would be coming down in 3 weeks time.I also belief a check is good as a mode of payment.... Get back to me if all stated above is ok with you so that we may proceed from there...

Regards
William Bruce

Here is the second email:
He would be staying with a nanny and the nanny will determine where we will be staying but i can assure you its not going to be out of reach for you.He is a very brilliant boy and has a very sharp learning skill. The nanny will be responsible for bringing him and taking him back home after tutoring sessions. He will be staying for 3 months and i will virtually be needing your services throughout his stay..He won't be having any program or going to school as he is coming for a sort of holiday. He will has all the materials he needs to cover so there wouldn't be necessary for you to find one.The nanny will be bringing him to your scheduled class..I will like to make the payment of the ist 2 weeks in advance..my client would be handling the payment for your services and also for the services of the nanny that would be taking care of my son. He would be sending you a check. He would include both fees in the check ( i mean your fees and that of the nanny).. .I hope I can entrust my sons and funds to be sent to the nanny on you. James will be moving down in 3 weeks time so there is no much time on my side
Meanwhile , I would like you to get back to me as soon as possible so that the check can be issued out in your name in good time:

I have received the identical emails from "William Bruce" about his supposed son, "James", a 7th grader -- the whole story of the nanny, and the advance check to me, with both fees to be included, and the request for all the personal information, plus two personal references.

There is also pressure to hurry up, since "James" will be moving down to Miami soon, and I should get back to him with the information "as soon as possible."

Take care out there!

So does anybody have any suggestions on what to do if you already sent them your address information? All they have is a name and address- what can they do with that? Does anyone really ever receive anything?

I was contacted by "colby alvin"

I have received a check fo $2850 by FedEx. It is "issued by" Mississippi Baptist Health Systems, Inc. from Amsouth Bank both of Jackson, MS.

The FedEx airbill lists the sender as Tyco Electronics in Harrisburg, PA.

I think I'll take it to my credit union after I've had a chance to show this stuff to as many of the students and teachers at the school I volunteer for.

I have been trading emails back and forth with someone supposedly named Scott Bowen... thinking he was a potential tutoring client. I thought something was off about his emails and am glad I found this website before I lost any money to him! Be careful, my emails were completely different from the ones already posted:

"Good day,

I am interested in engaging your services as my son{Greg}'s tutor. We just moved near the University of Alberta and I would like you to tutor him beginning from the Summer. Though, I am flexible on the dates as I would like the work to suite your schedule.
I would like to know your core subject areas and I am willing to pay $35 per hr.
Kindly get back to me if you are interested in the job position."

A later email...

"I am delighted to read from you. I am a very busy man and I am too pre-occupied at work.
You would start work immediately I get back home as I will be traveling to the United Kingdom on behalf of my company.
We expect you to give us a helping hand in any possible way. My child's tutor should be self propelling, a communicator, independent, responsible, practical, tidy and flexible.
I would like you to e-mail your full name, telephone number and contact address so that I can inform my company accountant to send your first week's pay in advance so as to serve as a form of security and commitment as you will be starting work immediately I arrive."

An email i recieved that i believe to be a scam. i gave him my address, not thinking what he could do. Im guessing to take the check to the police when i recieve it to help catch this guy.

Hello,
Thanks for replying back to my online job posting, requiring your tutorial I would like to make a tutoring arrangement between you and my 10 years old Daughter for the month of June-July 2009, I would like you to tutor her within a period of 1 month, on a schedule basis of 1 hr Daily, 3 times weekly, totaling 12 times in a month. I am willing to pay $50/hr. I would like to use these medium to inform you that my Daughter don't live in the US, she would be flying from Dubai to the US, I want you to teach her during her 8 month stay in the US, if there is need to extend your services, an amendment would be made to your salary. she would be dropped off/picked up by his nanny during the hours of teaching at any location you want the Tutoring to take place in your area. You would be receiving a check drawn from a Bank in the US, from my business associates in the US, since i am from Dubai and right now am in Cuba for a business trip the payments wont be honored in any bank there in Dubai or here in Cuba , These check would be made out for the cost of the tutorial services you are rendering, and also for the living expense, nanny fees of my Daughter .
Regarding this- I hope i can trust you with these payments, as the payment would be made out in excess, so all you have to do is Deposit and cash the payment at your bank, deduct your tutorial service fee, which should be $50 per hour X 12 Times a Month = $600 i would include an additional $100 for run around fee and any additional text book you might be needing- so $700 is what you deduct from the check you receive , whatever the remaining balance is after deduction of the $700 go ahead and deduct Money Gram or Western union transfer sending charges for sending out the remainder to the Nanny who would be contacting you with further arrangements and instructions regarding pickup/drop off of my Daughter to the library where you would always teach her. So i hope i can trust you that you will teach my Daughter good academics and some moral respects so that they can be good to their self in the future, i hope i can count on you for the tutorial and the money to be sent to the Nanny. I look forward to read a detailed message from you containing the following information, if you are OK with my arrangements.

Avoid luisag324@yahoo.com - Luis Gonzalez (though his email says Luisa). He writes in bad English that he lives in Sweden and has a son in first grade who will be moving to California. Luis asks for a tutor to teach his son English. After exchanging emails with Luis regarding the details of the job, he sends me a counterfeit check from his associate, Larry Lajorio, who apparently lives at the Holiday Inn in 515 S. Transit St., Lockport, NY 14094.

The check was misspelled - it was from "Liberty Bullion Corpotation" - and was less than he said he would send ($2700). The check was obviously printed by an amateur - the lines weren't even parallel to the edges. Luis wanted me to cash it, deduct my tutoring fees, then remit the remainder to the nanny via MoneyGram. I contacted the supposed nanny in Alaska and she said she had no idea who Luis. She was not planning on being a nanny in California and the address was wrong anyway - there is no 1800 Binkley Ave.

I reported the incident to the FBI and the agent said if I ever get a counterfeit check, I should just destroy it. Never deposit the check. If you do, don't spend the money - in 2-3 weeks the bank will realize it's not real money and you'll lose whatever you deposited.

The FBI agent also told me not to worry that Luis will actually visit me in person. More likely than not, "Luis" is in Nigeria and/or too busy running other counterfeit check scams or 'overpayment scams' to bother following up in person (which would make him more likely to get caught by the police).

Below is a copy of an email in the late stages of the scam:

Dear Mikka,

HOW ARE YOU TODAY AND I HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOU AND I WILL LIKE TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE RECEIVING THE PAYMENT TODAY FOR THE TUTORING OF MY SON AND I WILL LIKE TO LET YOU KNOW THAT AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE THE PAYMENT, HAVE IT CASHED AT YOUR BANK DEDUCT YOUR TUTORING FEE AND TEXT BOOK AND REMIT THE REST OF THE FUNDS TO THE NANNY THAT WILL BRING MY SON TO YOU AND AS SOON AS YOU GET THAT DONE I WILL LET THE NANNY CONTACT YOU AND YOU CAN MAKE SCHEDULES OF THIER ARRIVAL AND WHEN TUTORING WILL GET STARTED AND HERE IS THE MONEY GRAM INFORMATION OF WHERE TO GET THE FUNDS WIRED TO AS SOON AS YOU GET IT SENT ACROSS TO THE NANNY.HERE IS THE PAYMENT YOU WILL BE RECIEVING TODAY VIA UPS.

He is going by the name Daniel Gaspar now. I reponded to an ad and the response was written in different fonts like it had been cut and paste so I did some research and found this blog. Here was his response:

I acknowledge receiving your application requiring your tutorial service. Please be informed that you have been given a provisional appointment to be the English tutor for my 9 years old son. You are selected based on your experience and passion for teaching. I would like to make a tutoring arrangement between you and my son for the month of July 2009. My son’s name is John. He is a fast learner, active and confident. I want you to help him to improve in area of grammar and vocabulary.

I would like you to tutor him within the period of one month, on a schedule basis of 1hr daily and 5 times weekly, totaling 20 times for the month. I am willing to pay $40/hr. I would like to use these medium to inform you that my son does not live in US. He will be flying to the US from London , United Kingdom . I want you to teach him during his one month stay in the US and if there is need to extend your services, an amendment could be made to your salary and you will be notified accordingly. He would be dropped off and picked up by his nanny during the period of teaching at any location you want the tutoring to take place in your area. Your total payment will be $40 per hour multiply by 20 times he will be tutored for the month which amount to $800. I will also pay extra $100 to buy materials which are useful to improve his grammar and vocabulary.

I want to pay for your service and payment to buy materials in advance before his arrival to the US . I will send you one of my US cashier check of $3650 which I bought the last time I came to the US. I will write the check payable to your name so you could cash it at your bank. I am sending you that much money because of my dad's sickness which I spent lots of money to rescue his life because he is so precious to me. My dad got sick couple of weeks ago which made me spent lots of money taking care of his medical bills. The cashier check is for US which is cashable at your bank and it’s not cashable here in UK . The check will be for the cost of the tutorial service you are rendering, purchase of useful materials and the flight tickets of my son and his nanny to the US . Regarding this, I hope I can trust you with these payments. As soon as you receive the check, take it to the bank and cash it. Deduct $800 for your service and extra $100 to purchase the useful materials. Then send the balance of the money to my ticket agent in London so I can buy the fly ticket of my son and his nanny to fly there by July.

Email me your name, address and phone number so that I can write the check payable to your name and send to you as soon as possible.

Please accept my congratulations while I await for your response.

Regards,
Daniel

The nanny will make arrangement about the apartment they will be staying during her stay in the state and i assure you they will be very close to your location so as not to be late for the tutor.

My financier will effect the payment as soon as i give him the instructions to do so. The payment you will be receiving will be for your one month pay in adavnce and the rest will be for the nanny to take care of cheryl. The tutor will be for 3 months before i will probably get her an admission in a good school and i hope you will be able to help me with that too. Also i will like you to know that cheryl will be coming with the necessary books you will be needing.

So my son will be arriving the states on the 10th of July 2009 and i want him to study more while there in the states because am planning a relocation for him, I took him with me after I lost his mother some years ago which was the single painful experience in my life time.

You will be receiving the payment inform of money orders/check for the tutorials while i will also pay the Nanny that will look after him during his stay there, so as soon as you get the money orders/check cashed you'll deduct cost of tutoring for a month and send balance to my nanny that will be communicated to you later on .

If you are ready and willing to accept this offer which is in the best interest of my son and yourself, kindly send your full information to receive the payment so it can be made out on time as he will be arriving soon, also I want you to know he's my only son and I love him more than I love myself, I would have accompany him if not that am in the middle of a big project so I hope i can trust you with my life because he's my life and reason why i work, also i made a promise to his mom to take very good care of him and see that he has a very bright future.

He is aspiring to be an engineer but his mom would have loved to see him in a doctor's suit... I want you to teach him good morals and academic, also I want you to help me make him discover himself and follow the path of what his heart tells him to be, I want the brightest future for him, I truly hope I can trust you with my son and with the nanny's payment although my son is of out most importance.

Thanks for willing to help, I will be waiting for you to e-mail me with the following details so we can make concrete arrangement very soon .

I work in an automotive repair shop and they are trying to scam us here as well.

I received an operator assisted telephone call. The person stated that they are having a vehicle towed up from Texas (we are in Ohio) for repairs. They were going to give me a credit card number to run and wanted the leftovers sent back via Western Union.

It was difficult communicating via an operator so I suggested using e-mail. They gave KLEEBDAN@YAHOO.COM

Thanks for having this website!

Hello,

Thanks for the reply. The position is still available and thanks for wanting to take my daughter the tutor. Its really amazing and she is very happy.

I have made contacts with my daughter concerning the arrangement of the tutoring which she told me is ok by her and I want you to know that i am going to pay for 1 month, which should be $50/hr,and also am planning that you will be teaching her 2 times a week, for 2hrs per day,so you will be earning a total sum of $800 per month. In order for you to know we are very serious about this we will sending you a upfront payment for the first month via a bank official check issued by my financier and will be mail to you via UPS next day delivery. I will also like you to know that my daughter is presently with her mother in Australia and she will be coming over to the state in some few weeks time, i will be depending on you about the tutor. She will be arriving the state on 8th of August.

My Daughter's name is Cheryl, she is just 12yrs and very gentle and full of life.. She will be staying with a good and lovely nanny in the state which i will get in a dew time. and she (nanny) will always bring her for the tutor.

Also i will like you to know that cheryl will be coming with the necessary books that you will use in tutoring her.

Get back to me with the information below if you are truly serious about the job, so that my financier will issue out the payment asap and so to secure you for the service.

It seems similar to the ones you have received. I sent him a message back saying that I would need the nanny's information to verify this offer.

Rejoy tembe rejoytembe@gmail.com

Hello,

Thanks for replying back to my online job posting, requiring your tutorial service for my daughter, I would like to make a tutoring arrangement between you and my daughter. I would like you to tutor her within a period of 1 month, on a schedule basis of 1 hr daily, 3 times weekly, totaling 12 times in a month. I am willing to pay $50/hr. I would like to use these medium to inform you that my daughter don't live in the US, she would be flying from South Africa to the US. I want you to teach her during her 6 months stay in the US, if there is need to extend your services, an amendment would be made to your salary. she would be dropped off/picked up by her nanny during the hours of teaching at any location you want the tutoring to take place in your area.

You would be receiving a check drawn from a Bank in the US, from my associate in the US, since i am from South Africa and right now am in Cuba on a business trip the payments won't be honored in any bank there in South Africa or here in Cuba. This check would be made out for the cost of the tutorial services you are rendering, and also for their flight tickets .
Regarding this- I hope i can trust you with these payments, as the payment would be made out in excess, so all you have to do is deposit and cash the payment at your bank, deduct your tutorial service fee, which should be $50 per hour X 12 Times a Month = $600 i would include an additional $100 for run around fee and any text book you might be needing- so $700 is what you deduct from the check you receive , whatever the remaining balance is after deduction of the $700 go ahead and deduct Money Gram or Western union transfer sending charges for sending out the remainder to the nanny who would be contacting you with further arrangements and instructions regarding pickup/drop off of my daughter to the location where you would always teach her. So i hope i can trust you that you will teach my her good academics and some moral respects and the money to be sent to the nanny. I look forward to a detailed message from you containing the following information, if you are OK with my arrangements.

Full Name.
Mailing Address including Zip Codes ( no PO Box pls ).
Cell No ( If Available ).

N.B My daughter's name is Lebo and she is 12 yrs, she understands a bit of English, i just need her English reading and writting Upgraded.

I posted an ad on the Tucson Craigslist and got a reply. After telling the "Father" of a 15 year old child to be tutored for a Pilot Knowledge Test that the fee would be $240 for 12 sessions of one hour each, that he could pay using PayPal or money order, and that the child had to show up with his books and other materials, I got this email:

"Hello ,

have accepted your offer and its ok by me,I have make contacts with my son

So I want you to know that i am going to pay for a month lesson which
is $480 like you said and i want you to know that my client who is in US will be sending you my salary payment....Also i want you to know that the rest of the money will be used to get accommodation beside your location and any other arrangement for the lesson..

So as soon as you get the check payment then you will cash it and deduct
your cost of tutoring of the lesson for a month and send remaining balance to my Son's NANNY Via Western Union.

Responded to a Craiglist ad, to cholasj68@yahoo.com, for "Lang/English Tutor Needed". Before I got a response from the guy/girl/whoever, the ad was flagged and removed on Craigslist. This made me suspicious, but I was dumb enough to end up assuming it didn't mean much at first.

I got a response a little while later (pasted below), and thought that all the grammar, capitalization, and punctuation mistakes were a little fishy for someone who claimed to be a Japanese native (I'm a linguist).

I wasn't going to give an address even if I was going to respond, but then I googled "English tutor scam" and found this, and confirmed my doubts. Thanks to everyone for posting! Saved me time, I'm sure. (I feel really dumb for not realizing right off the bat that the whole certified check cashing business was blatant scamming.) Email response below (from cholasj68@yahoo.com, AKA Nicholas James):

I found it odd that he said he was born and raised in Maryland, yet his written English seemed awkard. I feel silly for having exchanged a few emails with him, but was excited about the "job". I figured out he was a scammer after he told me he agreed to my price and that he'd send me a salary payment which I needed to cash, and then send the remaining via Moneygram to his son's Nanny. I told him I'd feel more comfortable if his son, "Alfred", brought me the money in person. I haven't heard from him since. Here is his "introductory" letter:

Hi ,

Thanks for getting back to me and for your commitment..Just to introduce myself to you...I am Dr. John Nettles, a practicing doctor in Dentistry...I was born and raised in Marriottsville,Maryland but am currently based in Scotland,United Kingdom with my wife and children.

My Son will be coming for a Vacation in the States, and i want him to be busy with something gainful and productive. Therefore, i just want to know if he can always come to you and teach him great things on Classical Arabic 3 times a week of 1hr lesson per day..If this is possible,i will want you to get back to me with the cost of you teaching him for a month which can start as soon as he arrives..

He will be in the states in very soon and will be coming to your Place for 1 hour each morning/afternoon or evening..I do have someone that will always drive him down to your Place,i mean a Nanny or perhaps you can as well come to him..

My Son's name is Alfred,he is 15 years old and he is just a beginner in Arabic. I will want you to calculate 1 hour per day for Monday,Wednesday,Friday or you can as well set 3 days that suites your availability for a MONTH,and get back to me so that we can arrange on payment.Kindly get back to me with..
Thanks and waiting to read from you soon.

Dr. John

I suppose that these guys think that we won't figure them out...pretty sad.

Craigslist.com
I'm a 15 year old girl with highgrades and a very poor one income house so when i saw the ad i got really excited. it seemed kind of weird that the person was asking for my information and just taking my word on it and not giving me any information to contact them. they asked to me to send back the information which i did stupidly because i was excited about my first job. got the check and they asked that i transfered the money the same day. how is that suppose to happen unless it was my own money to start with? the person goes by Jerry Bentley

do you notice all this scams are from gmail accounts?

I immediatly typed people scamming tutors on CL in google and your site was the first one on the list. Your site had exactly what i was looking for.

Mr. Lawrence Cowalt

I was surprised by this one because it was based on a classified ad in my school's newspaper, where I didn't expect to find a scam, although the offer of $50 an hour was quite high. I'm hoping that nobody at my school falls for the scam! Hopefully the newspaper will put out a notice soon.

Here's one - name is "Albert Tania". The initial email in response to my application seemed pretty normal, and I followed up - for which I now feel pretty stupid, given this super-obvious shit (copied below). I suppose the "from Spain, moved to U.K." should be a general tipoff from now on.

Hello,
CONGRATULATIONS! After thorough review I have solely selected you for the services of teaching Raul and Rita English, I want my Children to be able to communicate in English very well. Hence I am putting in some measures to this effect.
Kindly be informed that you would be in receipt of the payment for your services soonest as a deposit to be sure i have secured your job position. Also note that I will include in the payment the money for Raul and Rita items and needs, Teaching materials, Books, and other sundry materials for their comfort. Hence, all you need do upon the receipt of the payment is to deduct the money accrued to you (i.e. payment for your services)and forward the rest to the store agent who would be supplying you with the materials via an Overnight Courier. I would provide you with the store manager’s details so as to have the money sent as soon as you receive it for the immediate release of the items. I hope all is clear as I anticipate the best teaching lesson and care ever for my kids......I would call you as soon as i have schedule our flight details and ready to come over....Get back to me as soon as you receive this email so i can advise you on other proceedings..

How are you doing? I saw your Ad on Craigslist regarding this same item for sale and I am writing to let you know I am very interested in it and even willing to pay you an additional $25 if you are willing to sell to me. I saw the description and okay by me though I would not be able to come pick it up because I am currently away on a Missionary Outreach but I would have my Movers Come for pick up once we finalize with the payment. Also, it's my first time transacting on Craigslist, I really don't know how it works but My Financier will be mailing (overnight) a certified check to cover the cost, Apparently the check will carry the payment for the item you are selling and the mover payment. As I do not know what you have in mind, but if you like the method of payment by sending certified bank check to you because that is my mode of payment , I don't really have much time to come over to see it, and if you are okay with my mode of payment, kindly provide to me the payee name and your home address and a valid phone number, so that the check can be mail to you ASAP. As per shipping, I will make arrangement for the pick up. So what I need you to do now is to get back to me with the following information for the payment. I will also wait for the check to clear before I have my shipper to come for pick-up at the exact location of the item.

Firstly your full names........
secondly your full physical address......
Thirdly a valid phone number to contact you.......

Best Regards.
I await your swift response.

I put an ad for french lessons about 1 month ago.
The only answers I got were from scammers.
Here is a list of names you gotta be careful with :
Allison McQuinn, Brian Adams, John Robertoc, Ethan Robert, Mary Williams/William Scott, Robert Paul.
I got into big troubles with my first scam: typical big check, asking for western union money transfer etc, threats...
Always look at the email adresse also, sometimes they are really weird.

Crap. I figured it was 2 good 2B true. I answered for my local town but the add also listed Conrad Texas as a target. The ad itself was professional, but the email response sounds just like the rest....

I have responded with a bunch of questions that he/she can't possibly answer unless they are local. Either way, beware of scams like this and be suspicious of anyone using gmail or hotmail addresses.

That same scam happened to me too. I'm very thankful my gut said it was a scam. I filed a complaint so we'll see what happens. I received two certified checks for $3,800 each. So odd to send two checks back to back. I was not born yesterday. Hope they find these people: Paul Cross, Gary Jackson, or find out why 1105 Media, Inc. in California is involved.
